Project Description

Following the demolition of the existing low industrial buildings, it was decided that the site would be redeveloped by creating various interconnected buildings. The result is an original reinterpretation of the old courtyard model created by structures of differing heights, all overlooking the central courtyard and with lateral crossings within the volumes.
The buildings were designed with a precise articulation of volumes and projections that would avoid any unfavourable position for all the units insofar as summer shade and winter natural light within the interiors concerned. This design also provides the best opportunity for thermal comfort in allowing the use of solar panels and natural ventilation.
Careful study of the openings’ orientation to allow for maximum natural light flow in all the rooms.
The characteristic red colour chosen for the exteriors contrasts well with the Pietra Serena (a type of grey stone) cladding the lower section of the buildings.
The natural material chosen is the Pietra Serena, a type of grey limestone. This was used for all the floors in communal areas and for the internal paths. The balconies fronts were created with made-to-measure cement pre-cast moulds laid onsite.
